Air Compressor Facts

In order to maintain your air compressor in working order, you will want to ensure you follow these procedures. This is by no means an all inclusive list, but it will give you some of the basic information needed to keep your system running.

Prevent Condensation

  1. Never underestimate the damage condensation can cause
    • Moisture washes away the lubrication from air tools
    • Condensation will lead to the tank rusting
    • Inline filtration equipment will not perform correctly
  2. The amount of condensation in a tank will vary with weather conditions
  3. A valve in the line before the condensation drains will make sure your system drains correctly
  4. Slope the header pipe downward to allow condensation to collect at the low point, making it easier to drain

Gasoline Models

  1. Normally mounted on permanent fixtures or vehicles
  2. Best type where electricity is not available
  3. These type of units can weigh over 250lbs

Electric Models

  1. Most popular type of air compressor
  2. Easy to use and light weight...makes it the popular choice for almost all jobs
  3. Large gauge extension cord may need to be used for large distances from electrical outlet

Oil Models

  1. Oil constantly lubricates the cylinders
  2. Oil models will cool the cylinder providing longer life and lower operating temperatures
    • This is crucial for multi-stage type compressors
    • Helps maintain a tight seal
  3. Like your car, Oil models must be changed regularly

Oiless Models

  1. Cheaper than Oil models
    • Less parts
    • Less maintenance
    • Less weight
  2. These models are a "value" type compressor
  3. Disadvantages:
    • Less durable
    • Performance is lower than oil type models
